Michael Wenzel is based in Rust, a town on the west bank of Lake Neusiedler in Burgenland where his family have been making wine since 1647. Today Michael holds 11 hectares of vines in some of the finest sites around Rust. He is a Terroir nut and you can really taste the different sites in the finished wines. His Blaukrankisch grapes from calcareous sites produce wines which are focused, elegant expressions of this traditional Austrian variety.
These are remarkable wines made by a great character. Small production, artisanal wines that engage the palate and mind.
Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel and the wine ages in large neutral oak casks. Medium-bodied, tart and juicy black raspberries and cherries, plum skin, hibiscus, tarragon, with lightly-grained tannins; a fantastic pairing with pork schnitzel, roasted game birds, grilled mushrooms.
