Spanish Stars Case of Six
We have dedicated 4 drops in our shop to Spain! We love Spain – it has classic producers making wine in the traditional style we know and love; as well as avant-garde producers, who are taking traditional grape varieties and creating a modern style wine or re-cultivating old, abandoned wine varieties and bringing them back to life. For this Spanish case we have focused on those avant-garde producers, creating wines in new and exciting styles.
Gran Cerdo Blanco 2019, Rioja, 12.5% (2 bottles)
We all know and love Gran Cerdo Tinto from talented, biodynamic winemaker Gonzalo Gonzalo Grijalba, so we thought we would introduce you to his white – Gran Cerdo Blanco. A blend of eight organically grown (not certified) grape varieties, this crisp white is aromatic and balanced. Perfect to drink with or without food.
Olivier Rivière, ‘Rayos Uva’ 2018, Rioja, 14% (2 bottles)
Currently making wine in Rioja, the frenchman Olivier Riviere has forgone ageing his tempranillo fruit and has created an un-oaked Rioja. Like many other biodynamic pioneers, his minimum intervention approach in the wine cellar allows the grape and the terroir to reveal itself. The result is a fresh, young red, full of flavour, mellow and moreish.
Guimaro Mencía 2018, Ribeira Sacra, 13% (2 bottles)
The wines of Bodega Guimaro are made by Pedro Rodríguez Peréz whose family have been instrumental in renovating the abandoned terraces of mencía that are so steep they rival the Mosel for sheer precariousness. Made from 100% organic (not certified) Mencía grapes, grown on very old vines, Peréz keeps yields naturally low, giving way to concentrated, juicy fruit. Smooth tannins and succulent fruit – pair this with charcuterie or vegetable dishes.
