La Raspa, Moscatel y Doradilla, Sierras de Malaga, Spain 2019
Get to Spain after all, with this crisp, lively white from younger vineyards, high in the mountains of Sierra De Malaga. Fermentation with Wild Yeasts, minimal sulphites added at bottling. 5 months on the lees in concrete tanks. Made from local grapes, Moscatel de Alejandria and Doradilla, the Viñedos Verticales is a project of two old friends – Juan and Vicente. This joint venture was launched in 2015, with the dream of producing wines that were an honest reflection of the land in this hot, arid part of Spain, on the Mediterranean coast. The vineyards are planted with very old vines, many of them on steep slopes of schist and slate soils. The sea breezes, and high altitude of the vineyards, allow them to produce elegant white wines, with zesty acidity, from fully ripe grapes. Viticulture is very traditional – though it’s less a philosophy than a practicality, as the steep terraces mean that most work has to be done by hand.
