Fedellos Do Couto, Bastarda, Ribeira Sacra
As is the case with many names in Ribeira Sacra, Fedellos Do Couto, is a young winery set up in 2011 by 4 friends.
“Luis Taboada teamed up with viticulturalist Pablo Soldavini, a proponent of organic farming, and winemakers Curro Bareño and Jesús Olivares. Bareño and Olivares were most recently the talented team behind Ronsel do Sil, one of the most heralded estates in Ribeira Sacra but both began their career in the Sierra de Gredos where they were close friends and colleagues of Dani Landi, Fernando Garcia and Marc Isart. It has built a considerable reputation for itself with a focus on native grapes and traditional agriculture.
Their Bastarda is made from a grape called Merenzao (known as Trousseau in France) grown on very old vines (50-70 years). Wine making sees whole clusters of grapes gently fermented in steels steel tanks and aged in old oak barrels for 7 months.
“Produced with a mixture of Bastarda/Merenzao/Trousseau grapes from two different subzones of Ribeira Sacra Riberas do Sil and Bibei, the 2016 Bastarda is better than any previous vintage. It fermented with full clusters and matured in a combination of used French oak barrels and concrete vats for seven months. It was really singing wen I tasted it, with ethereal notes of rose water, wild herbs and small berries, aromatic, perfumed, elegant and subtle.
The palate is as expressive as the nose, with ultra fine tannins and a stony, dry sensation that gives it seriousness and length. This is a stunning expression of the grape. Bravo! 6,500 bottles were filled in June 2017”. Wine Advocate
