Producer Profile: Rafael Palacios – Age worthy whites from Spain

Rafael Palacios is a pioneer in this historic region of O Bolo in Valdeorras, that had been almost totally abandoned in the latter part of the 20th century. He started buying up old vineyard plots (“sortes” in the local language, Gallega) in 2004, which are located in the westernmost part of the region, composed of sandy soils that are formed by the natural degradation of granite rock and by the presence of quartz shales.

The plots are largely steep terraces and are cultivated in a traditional way and with ecologically based treatments. The older “sortes” are managed within biodynamic agriculture.

Currently the vineyards owned are 28 plots with a total area of ​​24.5 hectares of the Godello variety, which enjoy  a continental climate of Atlantic influence. Located on the right bank of the Bibei River, its altitude ranges from 620 to 740 m.

Rafael Palacios personally controls the field work and the production processes, based on the utmost respect for the identity of O Bolo and the purity of the expression of its wines and is renowned for the purity and authenticity of his wines. Viticulture is based on respect for tradition, the use of ecological treatments and the management of the work within biodynamic agriculture. The must ferments in 500-liter barrels and undergoes a period of aging for 8 months in the barrels.

95 points – Made with grapes from the oldest vineyards owned – 6  small “sortes” that were planted by local winegrowers in the late 70s and early 80, acquired by Palacios between 2004 and 2007. They are located on the north face of the Bibei Valley, in Santa Cruz do Bolo and at an altitude of more than 680 meters. The Godello vines have an average age of 40 years. Rafael Palacios, Sorte Antiga 2016 €125

Biodynamic viticulture, after ten years of recovery to restore the natural balance of the soils. Fermentation in a traditional way for a month with its skins, in open oak vats. Aged for 12 months in used barrels.

94+ points –Wine from a plot of centuries-old vines, located in the heart of the Bibei Valley – Santa Cruz do Bolo. It is a unique Godello lot, planted in 1920. It is oriented to the north at an altitude of 680 meters and its granite floor stands out for the absence of mica. This causes its decomposition by oxidation to have been slower, so its soil is not very deep and the planting density is very low. The soil is not tilled due to its shallow depth and is maintained thanks to the dry straw cover to preserve its freshness in the dry summer season”- Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate


Rafael Palacios, O Soro, 2016 €175

Wine from a single plot, located in the Valle del Bibei – Santa Cruz do Bolo, planted on terraces in  1978, with an original Godello clone of  very low vigour and the base of future plantings for the estate. It is cultivated in a traditional way with animal traction and applying the methods of biodynamic agriculture, as well as pruning and harvesting that are carried out according to the lunar calendar. Fermentation in 500 litre barrels and it undergoes aging for 8 months, also in barrel.
