The Green Man Wines Story
We often get asked where the name Green Man Wines came from. There were a few inspirations – the first being that the “green” message was part of our concept from day one. Our focus was to stock mostly small-production, organic and sustainable wines as much as possible. Green also means “go” and we wanted to be a dynamic business, constantly open to innovation and change. Also the shop is serendipitously situated at a pedestrian crossing and the green man inspired our logo! Oh and the man is David and wine is what we sell!
Green Man Wines showcases a range of artisan wines from quality-driven producers, from around the world. Many of these producers work organically or biodynamically and in a low intervention way in the pursuit of wines that have character, balance and digestibility.
We love wine – not any old wine, mind, but interesting, authentic stuff with a story to tell about where it comes from, the kinds of people, land, culture and weather conditions that shape it, no matter its origin.
Green Man Wines was founded by David and Claire Gallagher in 2015. With their 20 years’ experience in the wine trade in Ireland, including working in retail & restaurants, travelling to wine destinations far and wide and countless tastings; the opening of Green Man Wines was the fulfilment of a life long dream for the couple. The vision was to make the world of wine accessible to their customers, by sharing their passion, expertise, knowledge and love of wine.
Sadly, Claire passed away in June 2020 and is sorely missed by the GMW team, her many friends in the wine trade and the local community. Her legacy is the energy and passion she brought to the business and her vision lives on in the vibrancy that is Green Man Wines.
“Wine brought Claire and I together and we knew early on that we wanted to open a wine shop one day. The vision was to offer the great wines of the world, which ignited our interest in wine in the first place, as well as to showcase the new, dynamic producers who have burst onto the scene with low intervention, food friendly wines, usually made from local, indigenous grapes,” said David. “We have a fantastic collection of Cru Classes from Bordeaux; Super-Tuscans; rare Burgundies and Californian wines, as well as highly sought after grower Champagnes. We also offer one of Ireland’s best collections of cutting edge, quirkier wines, that offer something different to the curious wine drinker. These wines represent the new generation of wine makers, who are bringing the old techniques and grapes back to life and we are one of the first wine shops in Ireland to embrace these wines and give them pride of place on our shelves.”
No wine makes the cut for the shop unless it has been quality checked and tasted by David and his team. This means their customer can be reassured that Green Man Wines will stand over every wine they sell.
Green Man Larder was launched in September 2020 and offers a delectable selection of goodies, including charcuterie, cheese, small production olive oils, vinegars and other tasty treats. The Larder has expanded to include Cook at Home meals from China Sichuan and Michael’s of Mountmerrion, available Wednesday to Saturday. The Green Man Wine Bar and Restaurant, which proved to be a huge hit with locals and won Best Wine Experience in 2019, remains closed indoors, as a result of lock down restrictions. Since outdoor dining re-opened in June, we have been welcoming back our loyal customers for a glass of wine, with some cheese and charcuterie, outside the shop, on a walk-in basis.
Situated in Dublin 6, where Terenure, Rathgar and Harold’s Cross meet, Green Man Wines offers a diverse range of authentic, interesting wines across all price points from everyday, good value wine under €12, right up to fine and very rare bottles. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Two words sum up the values that underpin everything we do: integrity and respect. We believe in giving our customers access to diverse, authentic wines and food and in so doing, we all support artisan producers who work in a sustainable way. Wines produced in this way not only taste better and are better for our health (and that of the planet) than mass-produced, highly processed products, but are also nourishment for the soul and give us a chance to slow down and share conversation, food and wine with our families and friends.
We want to create a space where people can meet friends in an informal setting to taste and share great quality, honest and authentic food and wine and have the opportunity to experience the diversity of regional gastronomic cultures through dedicated events and classes.
