The wines of the Rhône with Mari Sanaia
The Rhône is the second largest producer of AC wine after Bordeaux, and, like Bordeaux can offer the widest range of prices, from everyday value to the finest, most desirable bottles.
From Lyon to Marseille, the Rhône Valley is divided into two unequal parts, north and south, separated by a twenty mile stretch of rather green country where there are no vines.
The north is responsible for the most prestigious wines generally focused on the single varietal and taking a stylistic lead from neighbouring Burgundy while the south is broad, expansive, and generous, glorying in a range of grape varieties and a warmer, more Mediterranean climate is most important in terms of volume.
Tonight we’ll taste wines from a number of producers in both the Northern and Southern Rhone, tasting a myriad of styles and grape varieties from established, stellar producers and dynamic, new-wave vignerons.
Mari will introduce us to wines from A.Clape, J.L Chave, Eric Texier, Perrin and others whilst Chef Dan will prepare a supper inspired by this gastronomic hotspot.
